About the Journal

Revista de Estudios de Lenguas de Signos, REVLES, is a scientific electronic journal focused on the publication of research articles and academic and professional reflection in the field of sign languages. REVLES is sponsored by the Royal Board on Disability and coordinated and edited by the Centre for the Language Normalization of the Spanish Sign Language (CNLSE).

  • Publication Frequency: The journal is published annually.
  • Open Access Policy: REVLES provides free, immediate, and open access to its content under the principle of open access to culture and scientific research for a greater global exchange of knowledge. It does not charge any fees for the publication and evaluation of articles.
  • Disclaimer: The opinions and facts expressed in each work are the sole responsibility of the authors.


Section Policy

REVLES is composed of the following sections:

  • Articles: academic and/or scientific contributions, research results, theoretical and analytical approaches, among others.
  • Notes: research notes and documentary reviews.
  • Reviews: expository and argumentative contributions of monographic works that may be of interest to the linguistic and scientific community.
  • Doctoral Theses: summaries of completed doctoral theses, outlining their table of contents, objectives, methodology, and contributions.
  • Other significant contributions for the specific area of ​​the journal.
  • News: brief contributions on initiatives, projects, news, interviews, anniversaries, products, activities, etc. related to sign languages ​​or signing communities.

Contributions submitted to the Articles, Notes, and Other Contributions sections undergo an anonymous peer review process, which does not apply to the Reviews, Doctoral Theses, and News sections.

The Guidelines for Authors detail the formal and technical instructions required for manuscripts in the indicated sections.


Publishing Institution

Revista de Estudios de Lenguas de Signos, REVLES is sponsored by the Royal Board on Disability, an autonomous body attached to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and the 2030 Agenda. Its purpose is to promote and improve the rights of persons with disabilities, as well as their personal development, social inclusion, and disability prevention through the planning of disability-related policies, strategies, plans, and programs.

The journal is coordinated and edited by the Centre for the Language Normalization of the Spanish Sign Language (CNLSE), an advisory center to the Royal Board on Disability. The first issue of Revista de Estudios de Lenguas de Signos, REVLES, was published in 2019. During its first years, REVLES was included in some of the main national and international indexing systems, databases, and directories.

In 2024, REVLES will introduce significant improvements, such as the update of its Editorial Policy, new quality criteria aligned with the main indexing systems, and the incorporation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, with special emphasis on disability as a cross-cutting issue and the gender perspective. In this way, it reinforces its commitment to promoting Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, and other sign languages ​​as fundamental tools for the empowerment of deaf and deafblind people, particularly in relation to quality education (SDG 4) and equal opportunities (SDG 10). REVLES' editorial policy, aligned with the 2030 Agenda, prioritizes an inclusive and transversal perspective, ensuring that deaf and deafblind people can exercise their linguistic and cultural rights on equal terms.
