Publishing Institution
The Journal of Sign Language Studies is sponsored by the Royal Board on Disability, an autonomous body attached to the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and the 2030 Agenda. Its purpose is to promote and improve the rights of people with disabilities, as well as their personal development, social inclusion, and disability prevention through the planning of disability-related policies, strategies, plans, and programs.
The journal is coordinated by the Center for Linguistic Normalization of Spanish Sign Language (CNLSE), an advisory center to the Royal Board on Disability. The first issue of the Journal of Sign Language Studies (REVLES) was published in 2019. During its first years, REVLES was included in some of the main national and international indexing systems, databases, and directories.
In 2024, REVLES introduced significant improvements, such as the update of its Editorial Policy, new quality criteria aligned with the main indexing systems, and the incorporation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, with special emphasis on disability as a cross-cutting issue and the gender perspective. In this way, it reinforces its commitment to promoting Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, and other sign languages as fundamental tools for the empowerment of deaf and deafblind people, particularly in relation to quality education (SDG 4) and equal opportunities (SDG 10). REVLES' editorial policy, aligned with the 2030 Agenda, prioritizes an inclusive and transversal perspective, ensuring that deaf and deafblind people can exercise their linguistic and cultural rights on equal terms.
