Format

Format

Regarding the signed format, it must be submitted following these guidelines:

  • We accept videos in Spanish sign language, Catalan sign language, or International sign.
  • For video submissions, we accept mov, mp4, and wmv formats. Tables, figures, and multimedia content may be included.
  • All personal and/or specific signs must be presented using the finger-spelling alphabet the first time they are mentioned.
  • For video recording, we recommend following these guidelines:
    • Keep in mind the safety margins around the screen to prevent part of the sign language from being cut off.
    • Good lighting for the person signing is recommended, avoiding shadows on the face and in the background.
    • Wear solid-color clothing, avoiding accessories as much as possible.
    • The background should be plain and uniform, offering good contrast with the skin color and not shiny. The background should be black, blue, or dark blue.

For versions written in Spanish:

  • The page size will be A4, with 2.54 cm margins (left, right, top, and bottom).
  • It must be submitted in Word format (.doc or .docx, versions 97-2003 and later).
  • We recommend following guidelines that promote the use of inclusive language and a gender perspective.
  • Font: Times New Roman 12 point, and 11 point for the abstract and notes.
  • Line spacing 1.15 and justified alignment.
  • All abbreviations must be described the first time they are mentioned, and notes must appear in footnotes.
  • All figures, images, and tables must include alternative text to ensure accessibility, including the number, title, heading, and source, if applicable.
  • The list of bibliographic references will appear under the heading "References" (not "bibliographic references" or "bibliography").
  • Citations and bibliographic references must follow APA standards, 7th edition.


Specific requirements for each section

Articles or Other Contributions in their signed version must adhere to the following requirements:

  • The video must be a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 30 minutes.
  • The video must initially contain a summary, with a maximum duration of two minutes.
  • The title, authorship, source entity(ies), summary, and keywords (3 to 5), as well as the list of bibliographic references, must be provided in Spanish to facilitate peer review. The title, summary, and keywords must also be provided in English.

For Articles or Other Contributions written in Spanish:

  • The content provided must be clearly identified with the title, author(s), and source entity.
  • The text must be preceded by a summary in Spanish (minimum 150 and maximum 300 words) and another in English.
  • Below each abstract, add 3 to 5 keywords (Spanish and English), in lowercase and separated by commas. If possible, internationally accepted terms in the scientific field should be used.
  • The text of the proposed manuscript should be presented below, with a minimum of 6,000 and a maximum of 8,000 words (including tables, figures, acknowledgments, footnotes, and references).
  • Once the submission is accepted for publication, a signed version of the abstract must be provided, with a maximum duration of two minutes. This version can be presented in Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, International Sign Language, or any other signed language. Additionally, two different signed versions can be provided, for example, one in Spanish Sign Language and one in International Sign Language.
  • REVLES provides a template tailored to the format of written articles.

For Signed Notes:

  • The video should have a maximum duration of 15 minutes.
  • The video will initially contain a summary with a maximum length of two minutes.
  • The title, authorship, source entity(ies), summary, and keywords (3 to 5), as well as the list of bibliographic references, must be provided in Spanish. The title, summary, and keywords must also be provided in English.

Written notes require:

  • Title (in Spanish and English), summary (Spanish and English), keywords (Spanish and English), and proposed text, with a maximum length of 5,000 words.
  • Once the submission is accepted for publication, a signed version of the summary must be provided, with a maximum length of two minutes. This version can be presented in Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, International Sign Language, or any other signed language. Additionally, two different signed versions can be provided, for example, one in Spanish Sign Language and one in International Sign Language.

Signed Reviews will consist of:

  • A video with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
  • A Spanish text version of the title and bibliographic reference of the document being reviewed.

Written Reviews will include:

  • Title, bibliographic reference of the document being reviewed, and proposed text, with a maximum length of 2,000 words.
  • Once the submission is accepted for publication, a signed version of the abstract must be provided, with a maximum duration of two minutes. This version can be presented in Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, International Sign Language, or any other signed language. Additionally, two different signed versions can be provided, for example, one in Spanish Sign Language and one in International Sign Language.

For signed doctoral theses:

  • The video will have a maximum duration of 20 minutes.
  • The video will initially contain an abstract with a maximum duration of two minutes.
  • The title, authorship, source entity(ies), abstract, and keywords (3 to 5), as well as the list of bibliographic references, must be provided in text format. The title, abstract, and keywords must also be provided in English.

Written doctoral theses must contain:

  • Title (Spanish and English), abstract (Spanish and English), keywords (Spanish and English), and proposed text, with a maximum length of 6,000 words.
  • Once the submission is accepted for publication, a signed version of the abstract must be provided, with a maximum duration of two minutes. This version may be presented in Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, International Sign Language, or any other signed language. Additionally, two different signed versions may be provided, for example, one in Spanish Sign Language and one in International Sign Language.

Signed contributions for News will consist of:

  • A video with a maximum duration of 10 minutes.
  • A Spanish text version of the title.

Written contributions for News must include:

  • Title and proposed text, with a maximum length of 2,000 words.
  • Once the submission is accepted for publication, a signed version of the abstract must be provided, with a maximum duration of two minutes. This version can be presented in Spanish Sign Language, Catalan Sign Language, International Sign Language, or any other signed language. Two different signed versions may also be provided, for example, one in Spanish Sign Language and one in International Sign Language.


Tables and Figures

If the work includes images or other figures, these must be numbered and submitted separately. They must be in XLS, JPG, or PNG format, as appropriate, and have a minimum resolution of 150 dpi (dots per inch) in the case of images. Additionally, they must have a descriptive and concise title that allows for comprehension of their content. It is important to mention the source of the data and/or information, indicating whether it was created by the authors or not if it was not extracted from another source. To meet accessibility requirements, alternative text must be included for figures.

Author Biographies

The manuscript must be written by a maximum of seven authors. A brief biographical note of no more than 150 words per author must be included, including the following:

  • Full name.
  • Institutional affiliation, city, and country.
  • Email address.

The REVLES Secretariat reserves the right to request additional information in order to publish a biographical note in accordance with the standards of scientific journals once the manuscript is accepted. As specified in the funding policy, authors must declare any financial support or research funding, if applicable.

Important: Each author may only submit one individual work to REVLES per year. Additionally, those who publish an individual work may participate in a collective work within the same issue of the journal.

Accessibility of manuscripts in Spanish

The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Write in clear and simple language.
  • Provide a textual expansion of an abbreviation or acronym the first time it appears in the document.
  • Do not use serif fonts.
  • Provide sufficient contrast between background and foreground color combinations of text and text images.
  • Do not base information solely on color. Ensure that all information available in color is also available if color is not available.
  • Avoid the use of bold and italics.
  • Justified alignment.
  • Specify the language of the document and mark the language change in all texts where it occurs.
  • If mathematical symbols must be included, do so using the formula editor.

Accessibility of Signed Manuscripts

  • All personal and/or specific signs must be presented using the fingerprint alphabet the first time they are mentioned.
  • Position the camera so that it captures the entire signing space and avoids any part of the sign language being cut off.
  • Good lighting is recommended for the person signing, avoiding shadows on the face and background.
  • Wear plain, single-color clothing, avoiding accessories as much as possible.
  • The background should be plain and uniform, offering good contrast with skin tone and not shiny. A blue or dark background is recommended.
  • Sign at a moderate pace to ensure comprehension. Avoid signing too quickly, as it can be difficult to follow.

Considerations for written content

Using styles for headings and paragraphs:

  • Visual elements such as colors, sizes, fonts, or spacing should never be applied directly to the text. Instead, use structural elements and apply styles.
  • Modify the visual appearance of existing headings to maintain the structure of the document (Normal, Heading 1, Heading 2, Subheading, etc.).
  • Two elements with the same appearance should have the same style.
  • Maintain consistency in the structure of the information; this can be verified with a "browser map".
  • Heading styles should not be used to highlight content.

Lists:

  • Establish nesting instead of simulating it with tabs, spaces, hyphens, etc.

Alternative text:

  • Provide alternative text for images and all non-text elements; it can be included in comments.

Tables:

  • Do not simulate tables with tabs or spaces.
  • Mark only the first row and/or column as headings.
  • Do not use heading markup solely for styling purposes.
  • For complex tables, if possible, restructure them into simple tables.

Text in columns:

  • Do not simulate text in columns with text boxes, tables, or tabs.

Links:

  • Establish nesting instead of simulating it with tabs, spaces, hyphens, etc.
  • Clearly specify the destination of links inserted as hyperlinks in the document.
  • Text should be meaningful in itself and identify its destination outside of its context.

References

References must follow the APA style guidelines, seventh edition, according to the following general guidelines:

Bibliographic citations:

References within a paragraph, when they are the author's actual words, must be enclosed in quotation marks. At the end of the quotation marks, and in parentheses, the author's last name followed by a comma, the year of publication followed by a comma, and the first and last page (p.) or pages (pp.) must appear, separated by a hyphen.

When the quotation is less than 40 words, it is embedded in the text, enclosed in quotation marks, and without italics. Quotations of 40 words or more must be written separately from the text, indented, without quotation marks, without italics, using the same font type and size, and with the same line spacing. A period is placed at the end of the quotation before the information.

Bibliographic references:

Each quotation reproduced in the text must have its bibliographic reference at the end of the article. That is, the list of bibliographic references must be included at the end of the manuscript using the corresponding indications, following the alphabetical order of the authors, with the oldest first if multiple documents by the same author are cited.
