Designing web-based questionnaires in accessible research for deaf people using non-standard tools

Abstract

Information and communication technologies are starting to allow research questionnaires and tests to be designed on digital media that facilitate their adaptation and accessibility for people with disabilities. These technologies allow the use of sign language videos, which is particularly important for deaf people for whom their first language is a sign language and where written tests could compromise the integrity of responses if respondents do not understand questions well in a second language (Napier et al., 2018; Gutierrez-Sigut et al., 2022). Here we present the web development work, using non-standard tools, and the process of adapting questionnaires to International Sign and Spanish Sign Language in the context of a research project whose main objective is to examine the relation between the success of deaf and hearing disability people and their quality of life, resilience and emotional intelligence, by collecting socio-demographic data and validated tests in several languages (12-item Short-Form Health Survey, 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and 24-item Trait-Meta Mood Scale). As the research is international in scope, all questionnaires are presented in six written languages (Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Brazilian Portuguese), International Sign and Spanish Sign Language, to be self-administered by deaf people on a web-based support. After a positive evaluation by the Social Research Ethics Committee of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, the suitability of the web and questionnaires was evaluated with a pretest of 12 items in 16 deaf people from 11 countries. The results are discussed, and the conclusions of the pre-test are presented.
