Abstract
This document presents a chronicle of interpreting for Spanish and Venezuelan Sign Language (LSV). Our data comes mainly from interviews and surveys of Venezuelan Sign Language interpreters (ILSV) and other professionals linked to the area. Data was contrasted with available institutional documents. We propose a periodization of four phases, delimited by various milestones. The first phase, the “prehistory” of ILSV, comprises the time prior to the founding of the first school for the Deaf (1935), a period that we can only reconstruct speculatively. During the second phase (1935-1985), organized Deaf communities emerged, and the first references to LSV and ILSV appeared. The third phase began in 1985, with the bilingual model in schools for the deaf, which empowered the Deaf community and demarcated the role of ILSV. The fourth phase is defined by the foundation, in 2006, of the national association of ILSV and their progressive professionalization. In the last years of this phase, especially since 2016, the social and economic crisis of the country has imposed dramatic changes on the living and working conditions of ILSV, which could be considered the beginning of a fifth phase.
